Bill of materials (BOM)

The structured list of components, quantities and operations needed to make one unit of a finished product.

A bill of materials, or BOM, is the recipe for a manufactured product: every component and sub-assembly, the quantity of each, and often the routing of operations and work centres. A kitchen manufacturer in Dubai has a BOM for each cabinet type; an aluminium fabricator has one for each window system.

It matters because the BOM drives everything downstream: material requirements planning, purchasing, costing, work orders and stock consumption. If the BOM is wrong or incomplete, the ERP will plan the wrong purchases, cost products incorrectly and show phantom stock. Many UAE manufacturers carry BOMs in Excel or in the head of a production manager, which does not scale.

In an ERP project, budget real time for BOM data collection and cleansing. Decide how to handle variants, made-to-order configurations and scrap percentages. Multi-level BOMs with sub-assemblies need care in migration. Test costing roll-ups on a few real products before loading hundreds. SAP Business One and Odoo Manufacturing handle complex BOMs; lighter platforms may not.
