UBL

Universal Business Language, the XML standard that e-invoices and other Peppol documents are written in.

UBL, or Universal Business Language, is an open XML standard for business documents such as invoices, credit notes, orders and despatch advices. Peppol documents, including the UAE PINT AE invoice, are UBL files with additional rules layered on top. When people say an e-invoice is a structured document, they usually mean a UBL file.

It matters to a UAE business because UBL is what your ERP must generate and consume. The accounts team will never read the XML, but the ERP connector or ASP will, and a document that is not valid UBL goes nowhere. UBL also makes inbound supplier invoices machine-readable, which is the real efficiency gain of e-invoicing.

In an ERP project, you do not need to learn UBL, but you should confirm that the platform or its e-invoicing connector produces compliant UBL for the UAE and, if relevant, KSA. Ask to see a generated sample from your own test data, and check that line-level tax, discounts and multi-currency amounts come through correctly.
