The periodic filing to the FTA that reports output VAT charged, input VAT recoverable and the net amount payable.
A VAT return is the periodic declaration a registered business submits to the Federal Tax Authority, usually quarterly, reporting VAT charged on sales (output tax), VAT paid on purchases (input tax) and the net payable or refundable. UAE VAT is charged at 5 percent on most supplies, with zero-rated and exempt categories.
It matters because late or incorrect returns attract penalties, and because the return has to reconcile to the ledgers. Businesses that build the return from spreadsheets each quarter spend days on it and still carry risk on emirate-level reporting and reverse-charge imports.
In an ERP project, confirm the platform's UAE localisation produces the VAT return in the FTA format, with the emirate breakdown and reverse charge handled. Test it on a real quarter during UAT, not on sample data, and make sure tax codes are set on products and partners before migration so the first live return is right.
