Scope of work

The written definition of what the implementation will deliver, which modules, processes, integrations and data.

The scope of work is the document that defines what the ERP implementation includes: the modules to be configured, the business processes covered, the integrations to be built, the data to be migrated, the reports to be delivered, the training to be given and the number of entities and users. It also states what is excluded.

It matters because every dispute in an ERP project traces back to scope. A UAE owner who assumes e-invoicing, WPS payroll or a Shopify integration is included, when the implementer priced only core accounting, will be unhappy at the invoice stage. The scope is also what the fixed price and the phase gates are measured against.

In an ERP project, insist on a scope detailed enough to be tested: process by process, not module by module. Ask for an explicit exclusions list. Make sure the scope names the UAE-specific items: VAT return, tax invoice format, e-invoicing readiness, Arabic requirements where relevant. Review it with the people who run each process, not only with management.
