SaaS vs on-premise

Software hosted and maintained by the vendor on subscription, compared with software installed on servers you control.

SaaS, software as a service, means the vendor hosts and maintains the ERP and you pay a subscription per user or module. On-premise means the software runs on servers you own or rent, and you or your implementer manage hosting, backups, security and upgrades. NetSuite, Business Central and Odoo Online are SaaS; SAP Business One and Odoo can also run on-premise or on a private cloud.

It matters because the choice affects cash flow, control and compliance. SaaS turns a capital cost into an operating cost and removes server management, but you depend on the vendor's upgrade schedule and data location. On-premise gives control over customisation and data residency, which some UAE sectors and government-linked clients require, at the cost of running infrastructure.

In an ERP project, ask where data is hosted and whether a UAE or GCC region is available, how backups and restores work, who is responsible for upgrades, and what the exit terms are. Hybrid options such as odoo.sh or a private cloud in the UAE often suit businesses that want control without servers in the office.
