The routine of reconciling, adjusting and locking the books each month so reports can be trusted.
Month-end close is the set of steps finance runs after each month to finalise the accounts: bank and intercompany reconciliations, accruals and prepayments, depreciation, stock valuation, revenue recognition, VAT review and locking the period so nothing can be posted into it afterwards. The output is a management pack the owner can rely on.
It matters because without a disciplined close, every report is provisional and every quarter-end VAT return and year-end corporate tax computation becomes a reconstruction. UAE businesses that close in three to five working days have a real view of margin and cash; those that close in three weeks are managing from memory.
In an ERP project, define the close checklist during design and configure the system to support it: automated recurring entries, period locks with role-based exceptions, a fixed asset register, and reconciliation reports. Run at least one full close in the parallel run before go-live, and treat a slow first live close as normal rather than as failure.
