The country-specific configuration of an ERP: tax rules, chart of accounts, reports, formats and legal requirements.
Localisation is the set of country-specific features an ERP needs to operate legally and sensibly in a given market. For the UAE this means a 5 percent VAT configuration with the right tax codes, the FTA VAT return and audit file formats, a compliant tax invoice layout, a suitable chart of accounts, AED as base currency, WPS payroll files, gratuity calculation and, increasingly, e-invoicing support.
It matters because a platform without good UAE localisation forces manual workarounds in exactly the areas a regulator checks. Platforms differ: Odoo Enterprise ships a UAE localisation, SAP Business One and Business Central have UAE or GCC packs, NetSuite relies on its international tax engine with configuration, and some products need a third-party add-on.
In an ERP project, ask to see the localisation working on a demo with UAE data before you buy, and confirm who maintains it when the FTA changes a format. For groups with KSA operations, check Saudi localisation and ZATCA support separately. Localisation that is nearly right is a source of ongoing cost.
