A connection that lets two systems exchange data automatically through a programming interface instead of manual re-entry.
An integration is a connection between two systems that moves data between them automatically. An API, or application programming interface, is the published way a system allows other software to read and write its data. A typical UAE example is an e-commerce store sending orders into the ERP, a bank feed updating cash, a payroll system posting journals, or an e-invoicing ASP receiving invoices.
It matters because most businesses run more than one system, and manual re-entry between them is where errors, delays and duplicated effort live. Good integrations keep customers, products and prices consistent, and make the ERP the single source of truth. They also remove the Excel exports that quietly become the real reporting system.
In an ERP project, list every system that must exchange data with the ERP, the direction, the frequency and the owner of each record. Prefer the platform's standard connectors where they exist, and have custom integrations built with error handling and monitoring, not just a script. Agree who maintains each integration when either system is upgraded.
