The controlled sequence of steps that moves the business from the old system to the new one over a short window.
Cutover is the tightly scheduled set of activities that takes a business from the old system to the new one, usually over a weekend or a few days around month end: freezing the legacy system, extracting final balances and open items, loading them into the new ERP, verifying the trial balance, switching integrations and user access, and declaring go-live.
It matters because cutover is where migration and operations collide. If invoices are still being raised in the old system while balances are being loaded into the new one, the two will never reconcile. For a UAE trading or retail business that cannot stop selling, the cutover plan has to say exactly what happens to transactions during the freeze.
In an ERP project, insist on a written cutover plan with timings, owners and a rollback decision point. Rehearse it at least once with a full trial load. Agree in advance who signs off that the opening balances match and who makes the go or no-go call. Keep the old system accessible read-only for audit and reference.
