Matching every transaction on the bank statement to entries in the ledger and explaining any difference.
Bank reconciliation is the process of matching the transactions on each bank statement to the receipts and payments recorded in the ERP, and accounting for anything unmatched: bank charges, timing differences, unidentified receipts or missing entries. It is the most basic control that the cash in the books is the cash in the bank.
It matters because unreconciled accounts hide errors, duplicate payments and, occasionally, fraud. For a UAE business it also feeds the VAT and corporate tax position, since unexplained receipts may be taxable income and unexplained payments may not be deductible. Auditors look at the reconciliation first.
In an ERP project, set up statement import for each UAE bank, either by file upload or by direct feed where the bank and platform support it, and configure matching rules for recurring items. Reconcile all accounts to a clean cut-off date before migration, and make reconciliation part of the weekly routine, not just month-end. Multiple currencies and multiple entities each need their own reconciled accounts.
